This round's featured interactive game is between Joel Wapnick (World Champion) and David Wiegand (United States). In a game between American teammates, James Kramer (United States) beat out Jim Geary (United States), 475-443. Geary opened with OU (how is that for a SOWPODS two-letter word!) and next used that O for OMnIVORA for 98 to the triple. Geary's next play was REAROUSE for 60 through the second ) in his previous play. The next bingo was LaMENTED through the second E for 75. Kramer's bingos were IGNOBLE for 75, ALEURON for 63, and AWAITERS for 66. Thinking the other Jim's plays were the better ones, Kramer admitted that he didn't know how he won this game!
At the next table, I overheard Brett Smitheram (England) say, "I played like a donkey and missed STEREOED to the triple." This, of course, caught my attention, and I rushed over. He defeated fellow countryman, Andrew Perry (England), 426-419. Brett got down ANCHOREtS from the A for 65, but mentions that he could have played CANEPHORS. He also played PANDERED through the first E, and ROSETED. Andrew played OFTEnER. Brett said of the close score, "You just kept scoring!" And Andrew politely responded, "sorry." Now this isn't a Chris Cree (United States)-Jim Geary (United States) after-game conversation!
Naween Tharanga Fernando (Sri Lanka) defeated James A. Cherry (Canada) this round, 446-370. Naween played EUTROPIC to the C for 98 and YEADING for 80. James got down ENFOrCES through the N for 82 and ELODEAS for 72.
Andrew Fisher (England) was victorious in his game vs. Robert Felt (United States), 477-406. Andrew played bATIZE for 95 and Bob responsed with ENTERED creating bAPTIZER for 88. Andrew also got down ANOPIAS and Bob played BAUERAS. Bob says this is the biggest loss he has suffered in the tournament. Three of his losses were by less than 10 points.
Joel Sherman (United States) defeated Patrick Litunya (Kenya) in a close game, 393-390. Surprisingly, I see only one bingo: SLAnDERS for 80, which Joel played.
John Chew points out that Mary Rhoades asked for her assistance in a word challenge. David Acton (England) extended JARGON to make k2 JARGONElLE for 34 points. His opponent, David Webb (England), challenged and John had to consult the Chambers dictionary to find that it was acceptable.
Joel Wapnick (World Champion) and Brian Cappelletto (United States) are our only 10-1 players now with Pakorn Nemitrmansuk (Thailand) and Naween Tharanga Fernando (Sri Lanka) the sole 9-2 players right behind.
