Round 23Well, we got our answer on the game to watch, a repeat of round 20's result, Joel Wapnick (World Champion) defeats fellow countryman Adam Logan (Canada), 446-358. Adam got down VOLITATE to a TE down the central triple line for 36. He also played MUSK hooking an S onto BERLIN for 54, and NEGATRON to the second N. Joel played PYRITIC, ENROUND, and FOlIAgE. The player who won this game could go on to try for the final two. So, it is Joel who gets to play for a final spot.
At table 2, James Kramer (United States) defeated Andrew Fisher (England), 480-468. Jim came out of the gates with all guns ablaze playing four bingos in a row: OXaLATE for 80, pREVUED for 75, ROTUNDAS through the U for 68, and ALASTOR for 85. The score at this point was 308-165 in Jim's favor. Andrew got down TREPANG for 72, JEWED for 48, and MILDENS for 85. It is a testment to Andrew's strong play that lost this game by a mere 12 points. As I approached the game, I saw Andrew smiling and I suggested that the smile must indicate a win. He shook his head and said that he hadn't won, but he didn't take it too seriously.
At board 1, John Holgate (Australia) seized the opportunity and whipped up on Brian Cappelletto (United States), 444-399. John got down VARIATEd through that second A for 70 and the lovely dISCOVER off the blank d in the earlier play for 101 (it was a double-double). Brian played BETHESDa through the first E for 96 and ERADIATE through the T for 60. John's favorite game of the play came when he put down DONOR, creating RERADIATE for 57.
Since Joel Wapnick (World Champion) won and James Kramer (United States) won, they will play at board 2 for the second final spot. As John says, that is the game to watch. At board 1, still Gibsonized, Brian Cappelletto (United States) will be playing Andrew Davis (England).
It has been a real joy to watch this event unfold. I can't wait for the next round!
