Round 3Steven Gruzd (South Africa) defeated Paul Stephen Cleary (Australia) this round, 532-477. Paul played DETECTION, through an IO, also hooking onto MOO creating the word MOON, for 95 points. Steve got down SEALERS for 77, POETICAL through a C for 74 (which he later extended to POETICALLY for 34), and UNVERSeD for 86. Paul's plays also included CHAW for 64 on the triple, QUIRTED for 54, and ENJAMBs for 66. Steve contends that his plays of HAIK for 61 and SLURRING for 79 clinched the game up for him.
In the monster spread department, Christopher Sykes (Canada) defeated Rodney Talbot (Australia) 633-284. That is a 349 difference!
In a U.S. showdown, Jere Mead (United States) defeated James Kramer (United States), 523-344. Jere, undefeated now, had an opening rack of KAEISST. He said he ruminated for a long time thinking there had to be something> British in that rack. There wasn't, he discovered after the game, so his opening play of KAS was probably best. Jere got down DErIDERS for 70, VITESSE for 73, and AMITROLE for 64. Jim played LACKEYED for 72 through the K. While I was there, Jim shared his favorite play thus far: TABULIs, hooking the L in this play onto PUDENDA, creating PUDENDAL for 94 points. In that game, he also got down INFORCED and STUGGY while Allan Simmons (England) played BiOGENY for 96. Jim won, 464-422.
Robin Pollock Daniel (Canada) has her first win of the tournament, 475-277, against Lewis Singh (Guyana). She got down to early natural bingos and played INFOLDER through the L.
Naween Tharanga Fernando (Sri Lanka) defeated Robert Felt (United States), 429-413. Naween is now undefeated. At a nearby table, Siu Hean Cheah (Singapore) defeated Keiichiro Hirai (Japan), 434-413. And, another tie: Steve Polatnick (United States) and Dixon Assesa (Kenya), 392. On that board, I see that Dixon got down BLOVIaTE.
