Round 1And the much anticipated WSC 2001 is under way! The first challenge of the tournament was UMBRATE. Ruled unacceptable, Rick Wong points out that UMBRATED is an OSW acceptable play. The second challenge of the tournament was FANWISE, an ospd acceptable play.
We've had a shortage of clocks in the tournament and John Chew's G8 gametimer got pressed into use at one game. We hope to iron out this equipment shortage quickly.
We are down to 88 players from a high of 98. The players (country) missing/replaced are:
(Guyana) Michael Carter/Lewis Singh (Guyana) (Philippines) Bonnie McCala/Mario Miranda (Philippines) (Liberia) James Flomo/none (Nigeria) Biyi Oyadiran/Femi Awowade (Nigeria) (Nigeria) Saheed Gbolaga Jimoh/Sammy Okosagah (Nigeria) (Nigeria) Moshood Olasunkanmi Sanni/none
And, as a result of being one player short, Chris Cree (United States), our U.S. alternate is playing. He is excited to be given a chance to compete and is giving us all a Texas grin from ear to ear.
John Luebkemann (United States) has started the tournament off with an emotional game. His SCRABBLE® mentor, Nell Crawford, a dedicated cat lover who taught him much about this game, passed away last month. He has a beautifully framed photo of her with him. Between the ages of 7-12, Nell taught John "all his instinct." In his game vs. Cecil Fernandes Prabhu (Gulf Champion), John had the chance to bingo with KITTENS for 97 points. John won, 459-332.
The of the tournament's Davids (of which we have five) are starting with a bang. David Delicata (Malta) and David Wiegand (United States) tied with scores of 467!
