tsh Reports Back to NSC 2012 Live Coverage NSC 2012 Commentary: Round 31[ ] Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, Round 24, Round 25, Round 26, Round 27, Round 28, Round 29, Round 30, Round 31, After the Tournament. Round 31 Sam Masling (Washington, DC) and Amalan Iyengar (Chapel Hill, NC) were at table 1 in division 4 this round. The winner would be our champion. I note that Amalan had won the last two games they'd played. Their game not quiet over, I see ROsEATE on the board. It was Amalan's win again, 368-310. Congratuations to Amalan for winning division 4 at this year's NSC! Another champion is determined: Nigel Richards (Malaysia) manages the 170-point or more win and defeats David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC) and annotated board 1. Check it out! After the game was over, David looked up a few things and realized he'd been too conservative when he played HANTING for 32. He had a spot for and thought about NORTHING, but wasn't sure enough. In retrospect, he thinks it would have been way better. Game annotator, Kate Watson, said it was a fascinating game to watch. The other game annotator, Pete Zeigler, talked about the skill involved in protecting a large lead or winning by a large amount. Nigel demonstrated it! There was some tracking confusion near the end for David, but I wasn't able to get all the details. [error: no such id: artmoore] tells me that he bingoed with FINALeS in his last game. He also got down BURrNERS, and DITSIER. His opponent, Gary Perman (Blairsville, PA) played TERATISM. Chris Lipe (Rome, NY) is heading off to play SCRABBLE track, a new game that a few runners came up with: playing SCRABBLE and after each turn, running a lap around the track WHILE YOUR CLOCK IS RUNNING. So far, Chris Lipe (Rome, NY), Winter Zxqkj (Houston, TX), Evans Clinchy (Boston, MA), and John OLaughlin (Cambridge, MA) are in on this insanity. In this heat, too! After the laps, he flies to England for two weeks to vacation and play in an ABSP event called the BMSC. Then he flies to New York to do a Labor Day tournament and then back home, to rest, I bet! Another champion is decided: by defeating Alan Stern (Shadow Hills, CA) two games in a row, Adam Ginzberg (Swarthmore, PA) takes division two top honors. Grats to Adam, too! Well, all our champions are determined, prize ceremony is soon!
