Round 3

I saw Randy Greenspan (Delray Beach, FL) head toward board 1 in division 1 to play Nigel Richards (Malaysia). Having never met before, they shook hands. A few turns into the game, Nigel found HIERODULES through the separated first E and D. And to add insult to injury, he next drew an S out of the bag and played QADIS/HIERODULES for 117! A nice how do you do for poor Randy! I'm going to let you look up the definition to that word on your own! If you haven't been visiting the annotated game section, here is a link to check out: http://www.scrabbleplayers.org/tourneys/2012/nsc/build2/photo/3/nigel-randy.html .

Kate has been on a food theme this round. In division 1 she found ORZO played by Nigel Richards (Malaysia), "GHEE" played on a Maddy Kamen (Covina, CA) vs. Scott Appel (Elkins Park, PA) board, BURRITo on a Nawapadol Sayavesa (Thailand) vs. Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR) board, PlANTAIN on a Mark Przybyszewski (Depew, NY) vs. Martin Weisskopf (Huntsville, AL), ANTiDORA on an Evans Clinchy (Boston, MA) vs. Jason Li (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux QC) (ANTIDORA is a holy bread), and TAVERNER played by Win Inthara (Orlando, FL). She spotted Chris Cree (Dallas, TX) play FEdORAS against Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) (who is wearing a fedora today!).

From the "nice find" department, Conrad Bassett-Bouchard (Piedmont, CA) brings me over to a Jason Li (Dollard-Des-Ormeaux QC) vs. Evans Clinchy (Boston, MA) board. At one point in the game Jason held VOLT and ended up playing VOLTA, but elsewhere on the board, through an O and S, there was a better play that hooked to make EVE, LI, IS, and TI. Yes folks, INDEED, the find is VOLOST! Evans won their game, 450-397.

So, in the spirit of fun, both BURRITO and VOLOST were entertained or played this round. After-hours SCRABBLE players rejoice!

Tina Totem King is enjoying doing data entry for the event. She is finding John Chew amazingly patient and the program pretty unbreakable. So far, the only errors have been by the players and she is crossing her fingers!
