Round 30 We've got a situation brewing here. At annotated table 1 in div 1, David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC) just beat Nigel Richards (Malaysia). So, in order for Nigel to win the 2012 NSC, he needs to not only beat David, he needs to do so by more than 170 points. I go hang out with the two of that after their game ends. They sound oddly similar, glad to be placing and okay with whatever place they get. I alert David to the fact that others have a very strong preference for him winning. He smiles modestly and asks why. I explain that both Bob Schoenman and Mike Baron (Corrales, NM) hope that if he wins, he'll share his prize monies with them. He thought I was going to say something serious, so this cracked him up. Jim Burlant (Grapevine, TX) had a 604-325 win this round with Mark Miller (Radnor, PA). Mark played LOANING and then Jim "caught on fire." He played REPUTES for 78, pIRoGUS for an 82-point double-double, and SHANTY for 90. He later played JEUX for 78 ad SEDGIER for 78, too! Great game and you sure waited long enough to pull it out, Jim! Adam Ginzberg (Swarthmore, PA) vs. Alan Stern (Shadow Hills, CA) slugging it out. I see Alan's eNDINGS and RAYBEAMS* (which Adam knew was phony, but left on for some reason). Adam made some nice plays. He had three bingos in a row: LITOTES for 66, EUCrITE for 70, and VIOLATED through the L for 72. He also front hooked VOUCHER with MAZE/AVOUCHER to the triple for 64, which drew a challenge. A 429-420 win for Adam. Matt Canik (Austin, TX) tells me about his opponent's DRAINERs through the first R for 131. Congrats to [error: no such id: yuki] for the find and the win! We have another champion determined! Happy Birthday to the first NSC CSW winner, Sam Kantimathi (Sacramento, CA). He secured his win by defeating Brian Bowman (Villa Hills, KY) this round. I can think of no finer birthday present! And happy birthday to our own Frank Tangredi who couldn't be with us this year! Aniekan B Uwan (Orlando, FL) tells me that he recently moved to Orlando from the Bay Area of San Francisco. And in this event, he played three of his former Bay Area clubmates and defeated them all! Today, he has his best game of the tournament, scoring a 602 in a game with Timothy Bottorff (Orlando, FL).
