Round 11 As you have seen if you're following our annotated games, Jason Keller (Highland Park, NJ) versus Dave Wiegand (Portland, OR): Jason gets DEVIANCY, AERATION, ASSORTED for Jason, REFECTS for Dave. Through PA and, Jason double doubles with TOPAZINE for 76. Of course, not to be outdone Dave bingoed out with ANIMATION through disconnected I and N for 70. Jason squeaks by, 432-417, and is so excited about it that he comes up to the commentator table to tell us about it. If you haven't clicked through the game, you should check it out! Jesse Day (Berkeley, CA) comes up to the commentary table while Kate's sitting at the computer: "I just scored a 644 — there was nothing really exciting about it." that seems unlikely. He adds, "things were already going well, but then they went ridiculously well," for example, drawing the X when there are two 58 plays available. Sherrie adds: Erickson Smith (Cary, NC) is a new face for me, and I saw him at what looked to be an exciting board... just as the game wound up, I walked over, all excited to hear about what looked like a fantastic match. Well, Erickson lost, with only 286. TYROSINE was Erick's best play. Jesse had GESTURES, TEENAGEd, SLOPPED, DEALING, and ARMORIAL. The piece de resistance was JoKY down the triple, and XI. This is the highest scoring game of the tournament so far, I'm pretty sure. Jerry Lerman (Foster City, CA) is a funny guy. He's so quiet, you almost miss how funny he is. This round, in his game with David Gibson (Spartanburg, SC), David played PEYOTES. Jerry said to Joe Edley, who was looking over their board, "since I lived through the 60s and did drugs, I didn't challenge this one." Jerry continued, "but David's skill was evident, because he blocked GANGLIAR." Fun other plays on their board; GERANIAL and pRUINOsE. Chris Lipe (Rome, NY) had a hard morning. he lost the first three, then won this one only when Bob Lipton (Vero Beach, FL) didn't block his outbingo. Bob did make a cool play with three in the bag, setting up QAT with the Q unseen. Chris took advantage of Bob's concentration on this spot, and fished. He drew his bingo, Bob played elsewhere, Chris bingos out with SMOULDER. Jackson Smylie (Toronto ON) vs Adam Ginzberg (Swarthmore, PA) — Jackson opened with EANLING for 68 and two turns later, Adam played ORDERING for 64. Adam then played SIGNETED through the first E for 74, and Jackson played the triple triple, fOOTLESs, through the second O, for 113. Adam fought back, playing SERIATED and OUTAGES, but Jackson won, 464-452. No news, but Timothy Bottorff (Orlando, FL) defeated Brian Galebach (Columbia, MD) and table 1, and Timothy is now 10-1 in division two. DIETHER, DETOxING, GALOOTs, YANKING, and TANRECS are on an Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) vs Eric Tran (Calgary AB) board. In the endgame, Robin grabbed the bag to replenish her rack, and Eric insisted he wanted to count the tiles because his clock was running. Director called. Ruling: his clock is running, he gets to count, Robin has to wait. They proceed, Robin wins 416-366. Orry Swift (Houston, TX) defeated Cecilia Le (Cambridge, MA), 423-391. He says, "I had UNHAIRY* — I'm glad that I didn't play it after all." She laughs, and says she would've had to challenge it. Plays on their board: DeVOTION, RADIcELS, LOANINGS, ARSENALS. It's been a hard day for Joe Edley (Port Jefferson, NY), too. He lost all four games this morning. I suggested more tai chi, and reminded him that he can only go up from here. Newsflash: Nigel Richards (Malaysia) lost to Nawapadol Sayavesa (Thailand), and is now in 16th place. There's a first time for everything. From the father-son annals, Dave Leifer (Alpharetta, GA) played his son, Scott Leifer (Mansfield, MA), and won! The game's turning point was when Scott tried WAIVERED*, and his dad had to call it off. Arthur Moore (Ocoee, FL) is smiling. In round 10, he managed to play LOVESEAT and won the game. The players are off for lunch, and we'll be back for three games after some much needed nourishment (except for Chris Lipe (Rome, NY), who forgoes food for pool time). Go to: Before the Tournament, Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, Round 4, Round 5, Round 6, Round 7, Round 8, Round 9, Round 10, Round 11, Round 12, Round 13, Round 14, Round 15, Round 16, Round 17, Round 18, Round 19, Round 20, Round 21, Round 22, Round 23, Round 24, Round 25, Round 26, Round 27, Round 28, Round 29, Round 30, Round 31, After the Tournament. |
