round 17

Bingo, bango, bongo! That was what Brendan Sullivan (Shrewsbury, MA) experienced in his game this round against Samantha Orleans (Bryn Mawr, PA). PATROnAGE for 83, SAMPLING for 78, and GALEATED for 74 were his three consecutive bingos. Samantha challenged that last bingo. Toward the end of the game, she got down COaSTED for 77. Brendan won with a 536-302.

Jim Kramer (Roseville, MN) has an 11-point win against Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) this round at table 2 in division 1. Jim played only one bingo, ISLANDER, for 60, but he got down YARER for 59 and several other good-scoring plays. Robin played TRACKED for 73 and pADRONI for 64.

Joel Horn (Reading, MA) excitedly mentions that has won 8 games in a row! Go Joel!

Geoff Tongue (Tacoma, WA) had a big win against Andre Ornish (La Mesa, CA) this orund, 480-252. I spot Andre's EXALTERS played through the A for 62 and Geoff's SECONdE, which drew a challenge. Both players played a couple of phoneys this game that were called off. Geoff tried RETILERS*, but Andre challenged. Similarly, Andre tried RETANOID* and that went the way of the pony express, too. Andre was sorta muttering to himself at the end of the game, knowing the game was out of reach. He'd make a play, then look at it and say, "now that is stupid, isn't it?" And then he would try a spot elsewhere. Eventually it all ended!

Chris Schneider (Seattle, WA) confesses to me with chagrin that he had a blank on his rack the whole last game. I pretended to be totally shocked (surely that hasn't ever happened before!). He credits Jacob Williams (Austin, TX) for playing a smart game that never made an opening possible with that blank. At 9-8, Chris is pretty happy with the event overall.

Her neatly coiffed head was swaying back and forth as I approached the board and she gave me a look that as much as said, "Oh no, not YOU again!" Michael Eldeiry (Davie, FL) called me over to see his winning game, 512-459, with Connie Creed (Philadelphia, PA). She played FLITTERS for 78 and RECROWN for 74. Early on in the game Mike got down RIDEABLE for 72. After Connie's second bingo, she dashed away from the game for a quick restroom break and came back to Mike's second bingo, a triple-triple bingo through the N in her second bingo that was attractively slotted in the bottom triple lane. Mike played AMENDING for 167. Mike only won by 60 points, so that triple-triple was very clearly the breaking point in the game.

Jim Kramer (Roseville, MN) and Robin Pollock Daniel (Toronto ON) are playing each other at Board 1 in Division 1. Steve Pellinen and Scott Smith are posting the game live.
