John Luebkemann


[photo of Luebkemann] John Luebkemann is a 35-year-old actuary, who qualified for the WSC on the basis of his NSA tournament rating. At the 1997 WSC in Washington, D.C., he placed 49th. Luebkemann also played at the 1993 WSC, in New York City.

Round 1. Luebkemann plays Alec Webb from England, a 38-year-old forensic accountant. Webb placed 41st at the 1997 WSC, but the two did not play each other there.
Luebkemann trounced Webb 436-225, and is now in 2nd place overall with a record of 1-0 +211, behind countryman Lester Schonbrun.
Round 2. Luebkemann lost to Schonbrun 394-423 and drops down to 27th place, 1-1 +182. See photo above.
Round 3. Luebkemann won 442-351 against Brett Smitheram of the U.K. He is now in 15th place, 2-1 +273.
Round 4. Luebkemann lost 387-531 to Canadian Champion Joel Wapnick, and drops to 37th place, 2-2 +129.
Round 5. Luebkemann loses again, 404-572 to Roland Filio of Bahrain. He's now in 61st place, 2-3 -39.
Round 6. Luebkemann beats Akshay Bhandarkar (the Gulf Champion) 434-286, and climbs to 46th place, 3-3 +109.
Round 7. Luebkemann won against Steve Polatnick (US) 411-386. Luebkemann is now #34, with a record of 4-3 +134.
Round 8. Luebkemann lost to Sayeed Jimoh (NI) 378-490. Luebkemann is now #50, with a record of 4-4 +22. Jane Williams writes: "John Luebkemann is also 4-4. He says he only saw 5 blanks ALL DAY and one was the last tile in the bag in his first game. Says he can't complain though."
Round 9. Luebkemann won against Bob Lipton (US) 454-425. Luebkemann is now #40, with a record of 5-4 +51.
Round 10. Luebkemann won against A Ganesh (MY) 532-320. Luebkemann is now #24, with a record of 6-4 +263.
Round 11. Luebkemann won against Ronald Credo (PH) 387-343. Luebkemann is now #16, with a record of 7-4 +307.
Round 12. Luebkemann won against Michael Gongolo (KE) 417-387. Luebkemann is now #12, with a record of 8-4 +337.
Round 13. Luebkemann won against Trevor Hovelmeier (ZA) 446-348. Luebkemann is now #9, with a record of 9-4 +435.
Round 14. Luebkemann won against John Holgate (AU) 480-392. Luebkemann is now #7, with a record of 10-4 +523. Holgate remarked on Luebkemann's OEDIPAL$ (which is capitalised in Chambers).
Round 15. Luebkemann won against Joel Sherman (US) 471-377. Luebkemann is now #3, with a record of 11-4 +617.
Round 16. Luebkemann won against Joel Wapnick (CA) 425-359. Luebkemann is now #1, with a record of 12-4 +683.
Round 17. Luebkemann lost to Joel Wapnick (CA) 386-446. Luebkemann is now #4, with a record of 12-5 +623.
Round 18. Luebkemann lost to Brian Cappelletto (US) 345-438. Luebkemann is now #8, with a record of 12-6 +530.
Round 19. Luebkemann lost to Virgilio Quiballo (PH) 329-438. Luebkemann is now #13, with a record of 12-7 +421.
Jane Williams writes:
John L traditionally known as a fast player lost round 19 when opponent Virgilio Quiballo went out with 17 minutes on his clock, JL with 9. JL says it was a "rude awakening" and suggests the two should play speed scrabble tonight for 2 hours. They would probably get in 10 games!

Round 20. Luebkemann lost to Ron Tiekert (US) 403-432. Luebkemann is now #18, with a record of 12-8 +392.
Round 21. Luebkemann lost to Jakkrit Klaphajone (TH) 328-451. Luebkemann is now #26, with a record of 12-9 +269. Odd words: WADSETS, EWGHEN# (meaning 'made of yew').
Round 22. Luebkemann won against Steven Gruzd (ZA) 455-387. Luebkemann is now #20, with a record of 13-9 +337.
Round 23. Luebkemann lost to Kendall Boyd (NZ) 393-444. Luebkemann is now #26, with a record of 13-10 +286.
Round 24. Luebkemann won against Randy Hersom (US) 413-390. Luebkemann is now #20, with a record of 14-10 +309.
