Randy Hersom


[photo of Hersom] Randy Hersom is a 39-year-old computer programmer, who won his place on the American team at the Qualifying Tournament. At the last WSC, in 1997 in Washington, D.C., he finished 44th.

Round 1. Hersom plays Catherine Costello of Ireland, a 42-year-old self-described parent, who did not play at the 1997 WSC.
Hersom beat Costello 479-285, and is now in 7th place overall with a record of 1-0 +194.
Round 2. Hersom wins again, defeating Brett Smitheram of the U.K. 457-416. He moves up one place to 6th, with a record of 2-0 457-416.
Round 3. Hersom loses his first game, to Ronald Credo of the Philippines, 370-420. He is in 19th place, 2-1 +185.
Round 4. Hersom wins a game 408-380 against Roland Filio of Bahrain. He moves back up to 17th place, 3-1 +213.
Round 5. Hersom beats New Zealander Kendall Boyd 445-410 and is now in 10th place, 4-1 +248.
Round 6. Hersom beats American Lester Schonbrun 472-390 and jumps to 6th place, 5-1 +330.
Round 7. Hersom won against Trevor Hovelmeier (ZA) 424-385. Hersom is now #5, with a record of 6-1 +369.
Round 8. Hersom won against Helen Gipson (UK) 390-375. Hersom is now #3, with a record of 7-1 +384.
Round 9. Hersom lost to defending champion Joel Sherman (US) 424-497. Hersom is now #7, with a record of 7-2 +311. Sherman played STERILE, B(I)OSCOPE, COWBANES while Hersom played CULOTTE(S), GIGGLIER and DATELINE.
Round 10. Hersom lost to Phil Appleby (UK) 450-544. Hersom is now #13, with a record of 7-3 +217.
Round 11. Hersom lost to Lester Schonbrun (US) 411-463. Hersom is now #21, with a record of 7-4 +165.
Round 12. Hersom lost to John Holgate (AU) 352-456. Hersom is now #31, with a record of 7-5 +61.
Round 13. Hersom lost to Steven Gruzd (ZA) 310-349. Hersom is now #41, with a record of 7-6 +22. Hersom extended BOOM to BOOMERANG for 42 points, Gruzd later hooked an -S on the end of the word.
Round 14. Hersom lost to Leslie Charles (TT) 368-415. Hersom is now #51, with a record of 7-7 -25.
Round 15. Hersom lost to A Ganesh (MY) 398-410. Hersom is now #59, with a record of 7-8 -37. Ganesh made the nine-letter bingo AmENITIES.
Round 16. Hersom won against Arvind Abraham (AE) 445-301. Hersom is now #47, with a record of 8-8 +107.
Round 17. Hersom won against Sayeed Jimoh (NI) 413-410. Hersom is now #40, with a record of 9-8 +110.
Round 18. Hersom lost to Stanley Ndungu (KE) 364-397. Hersom is now #49, with a record of 9-9 +77.
Round 19. Hersom won against Lisa Odom (US) 515-400. Hersom is now #39, with a record of 10-9 +192.
Round 20. Hersom won against Ronald Credo (PH) 368-356. Hersom is now #31, with a record of 11-9 +204.
Round 21. Hersom lost to Steven Gruzd (ZA) 349-531. Hersom is now #42, with a record of 11-10 +22.
Round 22. Hersom won against Shafique Thobani (KE) 393-376. Hersom is now #36, with a record of 12-10 +39.
