	1999 World SCRABBLE^® Championship Melbourne, Australia November 3 - 7

On Thursday, November 4, SCRABBLE^® players representing 35 countries went head-to-head at the 1999 World SCRABBLE^® Championship held at the Carlton Crest Hotel in Melbourne, Australia. Competitors competed for a total prize package of $35,000 (US). Play continued through November 6 with the best-of-five finals on Sunday, November 7.

As per event organizer J.W. Spear, a division of Mattel, over 100 competitive slots have been allotted making this the largest World SCRABBLE^® Championship ever. As the host country, Australia has been awarded 2 extra competitors for this event only. By placing two players in the top five at the 1998 Asia - Pacific Championships, the Philippines has been recognized with an extra place. Representing the United States were 1997 World SCRABBLE^® Champion Joel Sherman and a team of 13 American players. Team Canada had 6 representatives, including current Canadian National Champion Joel Wapnick.
