Awards Ceremony

Only moments after the last game of the finals were over, and handshakes and hugs were given in the finals room, John Chew straightened his tie and began the awards ceremony in the viewing room. He thanked Hasbro Canada for their support and Wiebe Tinga, the new president, in particular for his attendance on Thursday and support of the event throughout. He gestured toward the Hasbro Canada employees at the ceremony and thanked them, too. Someone in the crowd potentially put John's memory to the test by asking him to introduce them. Robert Chuchla, stepped up and saved John from a potentially embarrassing situation by introducing himself (Marketing Team Leader Games), Christie Power (Marketing Coordinator Games and Puzzles), and Michael Sadovnick, intern working for Marisa Pedatella (Marketing Services Specialist). As it turns out, John assured me later that he had worked with them enough to know their names, but was just as happy to have Robert speak up.

Others thanked were his Co-director Mad Palazzo, several members of the Toronto SCRABBLE® club, and all the event workers. His last thanks went to Robin Pollock Daniel for coming down in this early summer heatwave to sizzle in front of the crowd as she led the gallery of viewers through an array of words played and words imagined.

And then it was time to give out prizes and money. The first player honored was Siri Tillekeratne (Calgary AB), who was voted by the players in secret balloting earlier today, as the player they thought deserving of the Michael Wise Memorial Sportsmanship Award. Siri was clearly overjoyed to win and joked that he'd performed so poorly at the event, that he had ample opportunity to demonstrate good sportsmanship. He will be sent a SCRABBLE® rug donated to the CNSC by Sam Kantimathi of SamTimer fame.

The next set of prizes were awarded to those who did not finish in the top 14 (they got other prizes!) and did not receive a bye in Saturday's game play. All winners mentioned received a round of applause and were asked to wait atop the SCRABBLE® rug for a group photo afterwards. They will receive a check for $25 CAD each. High Daily Word: Craig Rowland (Mississauga ON), Thursday (MISDEALT, 167); Heather McCall (Toronto ON), Friday (CANTERED, 131); and Libero Paolella (Toronto ON), Saturday (PATCHIER, 149). High Daily Record: Steve Ozorio (Mississauga ON), Thursday (5-2 +312); David Stokoe (Windsor ON), Friday (8-0 +767; and Lisa Kessler (Toronto ON), Saturday (3-0 +??).

The top 10 finishers will receive checks and places 11-14 were awarded Hasbro gift packs that included three games (Junior SCRABBLE®, SCRABBLE®, and Deluxe SCRABBLE®). The following were called out to join those gathered atop the SCRABBLE® rug: Linda Espallardo (Cote Saint-Luc QC), 14th place (10-8 +691); Lou Cornelis (Ottawa ON), 13th place (10.5-7.5 +522); Andrew Golding (Verdun QC), 12th place (11-7 +221); Maxim Panitch (Toronto ON), 11th place (11-7 +302); George MacAulay (Saskatoon SK), 10th place (11-7 +505, $100); Ron Hoekstra (Kentwood, MI), 9th place (11-7 +539, $100); Emanuel Chicoine (Montreal QC), 8th place (11-7 +832, $100); Dean Saldanha (Richmond BC), 7th place (12-6 +244, $100); David Boys (Dorval QC) 6th place (12-6 +761, $250); Evan Berofsky (Thornhill ON), 5th place (12-6 +943, $350); Joel Wapnick (Montréal QC), 4th place (12-6 +1123, $500); Shaun Goatcher (Mississauga ON), 3rd place (13-5 +210, $1000); Tony Leah (Ajax ON), 2nd place (13-5 +1015, 1-3 finals, $2,500); and Adam Logan (United Kingdom), 1st place (15-3 +1792, 3-1 finals, $7,000).

Robert Chuchla and Christie Power from Hasbro Canada and John Chew flanked Adam Logan (United Kingdom) and awarded him the giant check for the photo op and then all the winners present posed for a group shot on the SCRABBLE® rug. Adam then posed for some more photos while Lynda Wise (Toronto ON) managed to find the microphone to thank the person who had worked tirelessly to carry off the CNSC this year. We al clapped for John Chew and hope to see at the helm again soon.

Congratulations to all who qualified for and played in the 2005 Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championships!
