To reduce the number of tally slip errors, some directors use a Friend of the Director system, where a small fine/fee is charged to a player for tally slip errors. It is also known by the acronym FOTD.
Typically, if there is an error or omission on a tally slip, each player is charged $1. All monies collected either go into the prize pool, go to the data entry person, or are awarded in a drawing as prizes to players who made no errors.
Directors who plan to use FOTD during their tournament must advertise that fact in advance in the tournament description.
Portland, OR, director R.A. Fontes is credited with instituting the FOTD system.
