Saturday announcements

Welcome to South Bend my Scrabble friends and family! A heck of a lot cooler and much more friendly than the desert last year. As much as I love the glitz of Las Vegas, I’m quite happy to enjoy the Midwest hospitality and the much, much better weather!

Please note a copy of today’s announcements will be available by scanning the QR code on your phone and tapping on Announcements.

Let start with the ground rules of the Century Center:

1- No outside food and drink. Please enjoy the local restaurants IN the local restaurants

2- No food or drink inside the playing room. Enjoy the concession stand inside the Discovery Room, open daily from 8am to 2 pm, but please do so in the Discovery Room.

3- No belongings are allowed along the exit wall as this is a safety hazard. Please place them to the front or rear of the room. Any items found along the wall will be moved.

Now for the playing room-

1- Please locate the word judges in your area. The nearest one may be behind you. Collins players— you have two word judges, one located in the back of the room and a second next to the Command Center. For those playing on or near the featured boards, note the table with two word judges just outside the stanchions. The orange computer is for Collins; the other is for NWL.

2- Again, no food or beverages in the playing room. There are four water stations, one on each wall of the room. Please use the paper cones and dispose of them before returning to your seat.

3- If you need help, please RAISE your hand AND ask for a director. If you do only one or the other, it’s difficult to find you.

4- Please, use the QR code on your badge to record your scores. Both players must do this. The first player to scan will enter the score, the second to scan will confirm. If your opponent is unable to scan the code, you may scan it for them, then hand the phone over for them to confirm. Our Division Leaders and Assistants in striped shirts can assist. The Century Center offers free wifi to all.

5- We’ve placed charging stations at the front of the room and behind the Command Center, as well as in the Discovery Room. You may charge your phone while playing if you prefer, then retrieve it to finalize the scores.

6- Please, put your phone on silent now. If you are unable to, please turn it off.

7- If you must leave the playing area for any reason, leave your phone behind. The proper procedure is to make your play, hit your clock but do not replenish your rack until you return. Upon your return, do not draw tiles until you confirm that your opponent does not wish to challenge. If you have questions, please ask your Division Leader.

8- You’ll find the leaderboards as well the current live streamed game in the Discovery Room. You can take the time between to grab a bite, catch the stream or decompress until your next game.

9- If you had a Big Win, let us know! You’ll get a chance to tell your story and get a photo with the BigW which we will share on social media. We had a number of submissions during the Early Bird and would love to spread more stories. Let your Division Leader, Division Assistant, Social Media Coordinator Josh Greenway or Photographer Steve Grob know. For those on the opposite side of the Big Win, I know it can be tough to swallow and I appreciate your graciousness.

I think I’ve said enough. It’s an absolute pleasure to see you all here, knowing the difficulty many of you had just getting into town. If this is your first or if it’s your 21st championship, I hope this one is the most memorable. From each of us on the Championship Committee: Judy Cole, John Chew and myself, the staff on site as well as the remote commentators we hope you enjoy your time, you enjoy the town, and you enjoy the tournament.

Friends and family, you may begin.
