The 2020 North American SCRABBLE Championship will include the tenth annual Early Bird tournament, which will again be a NASPA-rated event. This tournament offers a playing opportunity to a group of players who can play in fewer SCRABBLE tournaments than others: NASC staff and other NASPA directors. The event will take place in the main tournament playing room and will be directed by John Chew.
Results will be posted online on our event coverage server.
Registration is open to all NASPA members in good standing. If you’re interested in playing, please email John Chew to be added to the player roster.
To be included in the pairings, you must check in at the event at the designated time. If you do not arrive by the end of the designated time, you may request a refund during the main event.
All events will take place on Friday, TBA in the main tournament playing room.
The Entry Fee for the Early Bird, paid at the door, is $20. Paying your EB entry fee in advance with your main event fee saves you 50% ($10 instead of $20); event staff and volunteers, and certified directors are entitled to a further 50% off ($5 and $10).
This event will be played according to NASPA Rules using the NASPA Word List currently in force for tournament play (NWL2018). (If four or more players prefer Collins, they will play in a separate Collins division, which will be NASPA-rated only.) Chew pairings will be in effect (with no fixed initial schedule), with Gibsonization. No division will have more than 16 players.
Average entry fees per player calculated across the whole event, less participation fees of $2/player, will be returned in each division prorated by number of players in each division, subject to rounding errors in units of $5. At least one class prize will be awarded in each division of at least eight players.
