I’m delighted that NASPA has again asked me to run the trivia contest at this year’s Scrabble Players Championship. The game is scheduled for Monday evening, July 22. People can play in teams of up to five players. Entry fee is $10 per person. 90% of total entry fees will be paid out in prize money, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

I will be using the Categories format that we used in Vegas and Baltimore. Here’s a quick rundown of how it works:

  • There will be four rounds.
  • Each round consists of 20 questions, each in a different category. The same 20 categories will be used in each round. Categories will cover a wide spectrum of subjects. Last year, categories ranged from World War II to One-Hit Wonders -from Olympic Track and Field to Deserts - from Flightless Birds to Movie Monsters.
  • Before the game begins, your team gets to decide how much each category is worth. Do you know everything there is to know about TV Game Shows? Put 5 points on that category. Do you know nothing about Irish Literature? Assign that 1 point.
  • The game includes some audio and visual clues - including a fun visual category called Something in Common. (So if you can tell that the three images are a diamondback rattler, hearts of palm, and Sam Spade, you’ll know the answer is Playing Card Suits.)

I hope to see as many of you playing as possible. Let’s have some fun … and make the prize pot really big!

Your host,

Frank Tangredi
