I’m delighted that NASPA has asked me to run the trivia contest at this year’s Scrabble Players Championship. The game is scheduled for Saturday evening, July 23. People can play in teams of up to five players. Entry fee is $10 per person. All entry fees will be paid out in prize money, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

I will be using the Categories format that has proved popular at past tournaments in Boston, Albany, Atlanta, and Lake George. Here’s a quick rundown of how it works:

  • There will be four rounds.
  • Each round consists of 20 questions, each in a different category. The same 20 categories will be used in each round. Categories will cover a wide spectrum of subjects. In the past, categories have ranged from The American Revolution to The Films of Martin Scorsese - from African Cities to The Super Bowl - from Latin American Cuisine to The Muppets.
  • Before the game begins, your team gets to decide how much each category is worth. Do you know everything there is to know about the Beatles? Put 5 points on that category? Do you know nothing about American Poetry? Assign that 1 point.
  • The game includes some audio and visual clues - including a fun visual category called Something in Common. So if you can tell that the three images are a diamondback rattler, hearts of palm, and Sam Spade, you’ll know the answer is Playing Card Suits.

I hope to see as many of you playing as possible. Let’s have some fun … and make the prize pot really big!
