Joe Edley


[photo of Edley] Joe Edley, 51, is the Director of Clubs and Tournaments for the NSA. In his distinguished tournament career, he has won the North American championship twice, and placed 4th, 18th and 3rd at the WSC. He has qualified again for the WSC on the basis of his NSA tournament rating. He is also the author of an authoritative book about SCRABBLE®.

Round 1. Edley plays Virgilio Quiballo of the Philippines. It's Quiballo's first WSC.
Edley beat Quiballo 391-353, and is in 37th place, 1-0 +38.
Round 2. Edley wins again, this time against Gold Eburu of Nigeria, 466-292. He is now in 9th place overall, 2-0 +212.
Round 3. Edley remains undefeated after a 445-357 victory over Suresh Chinnaiyah of Sri Lanka. He's in 7th place now, at 3-0 +300.
Round 4. Edley loses his first game 413-455 to 1993 WSC Mark Nyman of England. He drops to 12th place at 3-1 +258.
Round 5. Edley loses to top-ranked American female player Lisa Odom 371-466, and drops further to 3-2 +163.
Round 6. Edley loses to Kendall Boyd (N.Z.) 373-425, and is now in 43rd place, 3-3 +111.
Round 7. Edley won against Owen Bondin (MA) 591-324. Edley is now #24, with a record of 4-3 +378.
Round 8. Edley won against Andrew Fisher (UK) 457-333. Edley is now #16, with a record of 5-3 +502.
Round 9. Edley lost to Roland Filio (BA) 355-415. Edley is now #26, with a record of 5-4 +442.
Round 10. Edley won against Tony Sim (SG) 544-436. Edley is now #19, with a record of 6-4 +550.
Round 11. Edley lost to Brian Cappelletto (US) 319-417. Edley is now #29, with a record of 6-5 +452.
Round 12. Edley won against David Webb (UK) 388-371. Edley is now #21, with a record of 7-5 +469.
Round 13. Edley lost to Ron Tiekert (US) 417-430. Edley is now #31, with a record of 7-6 +456. Cheah Siu Hean noticed that Edley had played MICTIONS at Table 11, while at Table 9, Pakorn Nemitrmansuk had played URINATING (through the first IN).
Round 14. Edley won against Michael Gongolo (KE) 449-391. Edley is now #22, with a record of 8-6 +514.
Round 15. Edley lost to Pakorn Nemitrmansuk (TH) 430-470. Edley is now #31, with a record of 8-7 +474. Edley did bingo OVERHANDS and AZOTEmIA.
Round 16. Edley lost a rematch to Suresh Chinnaiyah (LK) 307-643. Edley is now #46, with a record of 8-8 +138. Suresh sets a new tournament record for high game:

Round 18. Edley lost to Howard Warner (NZ) 427-454. Edley is now #44, with a record of 9-9 +247.
Round 19. Edley lost to Andrew Cook (UK) 380-535. Edley is now #54, with a record of 9-10 +92. Edley bingo-ED SCIAENID.
Round 20. Edley won against Alec Webb (UK) 510-353. Edley is now #45, with a record of 10-10 +249.
Round 21. Edley won against Bob Lipton (US) 480-330. Edley is now #37, with a record of 11-10 +399. Lipton played steaning#, Edley airliner faconne# (not bingo) hematiod (sic) bimester$ saturnic#. Lipton recorded the score for HEMATIOD too quickly and forfeited his challenge right, Edley didn't realise the problem until after the game.
Round 22. Edley won against Roland Filio (BH) 389-322. Edley is now #28, with a record of 12-10 +466.
Round 23. Edley won against Odette Rio (PH) 383-376. Edley is now #22, with a record of 13-10 +473.
Round 24. Edley lost to David Wiegand (US) 424-450. Edley finishes #28, with a record of 13-11 +447.
