WSC 2001: Finals

Beginning at 9 A.M. PST (UTC-8) we host the finals of the 2001 World SCRABBLE^® Championship. Joel Wapnick (World Champion) defends his title against former National SCRABBLE^® Champion Brian Cappelletto (United States) in what promises to be an exciting series.

Game 1: Cappelletto vs. Wapnick

Wapnick wins 482-479, playing words like WHEEP (to give a prolonged whistle) and BAJU (a short garment worn in Malaya) to Cappelletto's INDUSIA (insect larva cases).

Game 2: Wapnick vs. Cappelletto

Play the game.

Cappelletto wins 410-372, and the series is tied at a game apiece. Cappelletto played words like JERRID (a wooden javelin) and TOZE (a Shakespearean word meaning to tease out), Wapnick played SAIGA (a small antelope) and FYKING (a Scottish word meaning to fidget).

Cappelletto wins 400-352 and leads 2-1 on games. Each player played a bingo early on: Wapnick's LOURINg (lowering) for 64 points on his opening play and then three moves on Cappelletto's OvARIOLE (part of an insect's ovary) for 72 points three moves on. They then settled into a slow, tense battle that left Cappelletto only six seconds on his clock, Wapnick four.

Game 4: Wapnick vs. Cappelletto

Cappelletto won 444-338 and is the new World Champion. He opened with OVArIAn for 74 points, played a second bingo (PADDLERS) for 74 points and VOZHD (a Stalinist leader) for 50 points in the middle of the game, closed down the board with an 80-point lead late in the game and rode out his lead to victory.
