Two members’ terms on the Canadian Committee (CC) are ending on December 31, 2009Those members are John Aitken and Tony Leah.  They will be replaced in a November election.  All candidates and voters must be NASPA members in good standing who are (a) Canadian citizens or (b) permanent residents of Canada.

The nomination process has begun.  Eligible candidates may nominate themselves or be nominated by another player.  Anyone interested in being a candidate must notify John Robertson no later than 11:59 p.m. eastern time on Saturday, October 17, 2009.  Notification can be made in person, by telephone (519-621-6432), by email (jgrobertson@sympatico.ca) or by regular mail (17 Fourth Avenue, Cambridge, ON, N1S 2C9).  Anyone who is nominated as a candidate will be contacted by John Robertson to confirm his/her interest in being listed on the ballot.

When voting, each voter may select as many as two candidates.  The two candidates who receive the most votes will be elected to the CC.  Their terms will run from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012.  (Exception:  Because the CC already has two representatives from the Quebec/Atlantic region, and three is the maximum allowable amount, only one candidate may be elected from that region in 2009.)

If two or more candidates receive identical vote totals, and a tie-breaker is necessary, a lottery will be used to break the tie.

SPECIAL NOTE:  On August 30, 2013, the CC voted to not allow any Canadians who live outside of Canada to run in a CC election.  Because of the regional organization of the CC, it was determined that an expatriate would have an unfair advantage in an election over resident Canadians because he/she would not be subject to the maximum and minimum membership quotas of the regions.

There is no limit to the number of candidates allowed to seek election each year.  In most cases the two candidates with the highest vote totals shall be elected to three-year terms that begin on the following January 1.  (Note: Because there are maximum and minimum regional requirements for the CC, a scenario might exist where candidates finishing worse than second in the election could win a spot ahead of candidates who finished with greater vote totals.  Similarly, it is also possible for a candidate to win a CC spot by acclamation in a year when other candidates need to be elected. See [[Structure of Canadian Committee]] for further details.)

Methods of Voting

=== 2020 Canadian Committee Election Process ===

Voters will have two voting options:

+
Nominations can be accepted by anyone on the CC from October 16 through October 31. The election itself (if necessary) runs through the entire month of November.

1) Online ballot:  An online voting system will be established and will be the preferred method of voting.  Links and instructions will be advertised on the CC WikiPage of the NASPA website. When voting online, NASPA membership will be verified to ensure voter eligibility. The online system will be a “secure system” in which a voter’s identity cannot be matched to how he/she voted.
+
If you nominate someone else, we must confirm that the person actually wants to run in the election. If you nominate yourself, your name goes directly onto the ballot. Incumbents are allowed to run for reelection.

+
[[Siri Tillekeratne]] was reelected by acclamation.

2) Paper ballot:  Eligible voters may create their own paper ballots to vote.  It can be a representation of the online ballot or a note stating the voter’s choice(s).  Any paper ballot will be accepted provided the voter’s intention is clear.  All paper ballots must be received by John Robertson, 17 Fourth Avenue, Cambridge, ON N1S 2C9 before the election period ends.  Ballots may be mailed or given to him in person.  These ballots will not be opened and counted until December 1.  John Robertson will appoint members of NASPA Club #471 to assist in maintaining the secrecy of the voting process.
