Last August, recovering from foot surgery and passing time playing with a visiting cousin, Prudy Beal had a chance encounter change her life. To improve her immobilized view from the couch, she contracted a window washing firm and its owner, Dennis Kaiser, showed up to do the job. Prudy says, "his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree when he saw us at the board. He mentioned Club #351 in Boulder and it was history from then on out. As soon as I could get around on my post-surgery boot, I went to see what it was all about."
Now Prudy boasts membership in two clubs: Club # 185 in Denver (directed by Laura Scheimberg and Paul McCarthy) and Club #351 in Boulder (directed by the aforementioned Dennis Kaiser and Bill Palmer). She says, "The Denver club is more structured and they meet twice a week -- Sunday afternoons and Tuesday evenings. Usually they have between 6 and 20 players. They track wins, losses, bingos, etc. and even have prizes for best word in any given category. For example, 4th of July the category was `celebration.' The Boulder club meets the second and fourth Sundays of the month at the local Barnes and Noble Book Store. Usually the turn out is between 8 and 22. It's less structured as we always invite any book store patrons to stop by and play."
Prudy's committment to has led to major life changes. Most imporantly, she met her partner, William Lincoln Palmer, at the Boulder club. Claiming "the 8-to-5 bit just didn't leave enough time off," Prudy left her human resource manager position for a more flexible job as a real estate agent, which makes more time for ", golf, and traveling with William." A sports enthusiast, Prudy plays tennis, golf, and card games, and plays spectator to baseball, football, and hockey. She says, "On any typical day we play golf early in the morning, tend to the tomato plants, then off to [club] at night."
Prudy entered her first tournament last February in Phoenix. She recounts, "My knees stopped shaking by the end of the second day. I had so much fun that I really could hardly wait to go to the next tournament." Not waiting long at all, Prudy and William took off the month of April and began a oddessy. They started with a Boston tournament, followed by a one-day tournament in Long Island, New York, and then ended up at a tournament in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Along the way they golfed in Alabama and took in a Rockies game in Saint Louis. "Believe it or not, we dragged out the game in hotel rooms along the way and `practiced,'" she admits .
When asked about her best plays, Prudy says, "Unlike some of the expert players, I can't remember all the plays and all the games, but I can [recall] the excitement I felt when I realized I was going to get a triple-triple for the first time." She remembers holding her breath and closing her eyes throughout her opponent's play because she couldn't contain her excitment and she knew her eyes would give her away . Note to her opponents: watch out when her eyes close!
