Opening Reception

Reporting from WSC 1999, Jane Williams of the NSA...

The 1999 WSC began with an opening reception at 7 PM in the Washington Room at the Carlton Crest Hotel. Players, many dressed in native garb, registered as they arrived at the event. Each were given totes with T-shirts a new Olympic Edition SCRABBLE® game (in honor of Sydney hosting) and a schedule of events. As wine and champagne flowed over 100 guests from 35 countries became reacquainted, or met for the first time

Introductions by Philip Nelkon, Mattel England, were brief and there was a short welcome by Mattel Australia representative. Ian Anderson from Mattel Australia (who by the way has come to all our World events) is thrilled to have the event here in his back yard. Ian drew names as Philip announced the pairings in preparation for Round 1 the next am.
