Round 25 Commentary

Ivan Blackman and Mitchell Brook, both division 3, tied at 394.

Carla Strasberger beat Charles Howe, 522-295.

In division 1 news, two participants with some of the most difficult names to spell or pronounce (okay, so Charnwit Sukhumrattanaporn wins the most difficult honor) [and Sherrie is making me spell out his name - copy editor jjc] faced off. After they'd written down each others' names correctly, they had only 13 minutes left on their clocks. :) Perhaps by dint of the fact that his name is longer and worth more points, Mark Przybyszewski defeated Carol Ravichandran, 414-378. Canadians David Boys (QC) and Adam Logan (MA) faced off and the 1995 World Champ did in the 1996 NSC/CNSC champ, 543-369. Dominic Grillo beat Tracy Cobbs in a decisive 552-310 game.

Division 4 updates this round: Donald Wold defeated Vinnette Francis (ON), 538-249. Four people are tied for 1st at 18-7, David Pearl +1467, Rosetta Donelick +851, Gene Tyszka (ON) +640, and Joanne Hood +463. In related Gene news, he has won 3 in a row, 8 out of 9, and 13 out of his last 15 games. To say he is "smokin'" might be an understatement!

Division's 3 and 4 have women at both the top boards. In division 3, Jennifer Hildebrant (AZ) faced Gigi Miller (NV) and division 4 had Kathi Cann squaring off against Rosetta Donelick.

I just ran into Charnwit Sukhumrattanaporn from Thailand. He told me he was sorry to report that he'd beaten his fellow countryman, Gerry Carter in round 22. After 25 games, he is 15-10. He has won the last four games against Gordon Shapiro, Robert Linn, Carter, and John Holgate (AU), a game in which Charnwit came back to win after a 200-point deficit.

Steven Alexander (OR), also division 1, just reported a 5-game winning streak.

Milt Wertheimer annotated Trey Wright's game against Brian Cappelletto this round. He said it was the most lopsided game he's recorded thus far in the tournament. Brian got down SPINaCH, DiURONS, and THERMALS, while Trey got down hardly anything. Their scores, 508-228, indicate this uneven distribution of tiles.
