Chicago native Scott Peterson <raindog@tezcat.com> stopped by, camera in hand. He is planning on directing a documentary about SCRABBLE^®, tentatively titled "Scrabylon." He and David Wells <wells.campbell@MCI2000.com>, the documentary's producer, are planning a Worlds 99 project. Scott, an NSA member, will be joining online discussions about this project, so expect to hear from him again later.

Michael Orford tells me that last round he had "sweet luck" in his win against George G Stone, 395-298.

In a division 4 "Battle of the Ruths," Ruth Ganley fell to Ruth Barr, 300-301.

Eileen Gruhn (WA) had an early, close win to Danny Panganiban last round, 344-339.

In the first big blowout I've heard about thus far, division 4's May Haney soundly defeated Sophia Murzin, 458-265. In a low-scoring finish, Ruth Patrick defeated Marjoie Bash, 329-281.

In round 1 at table 12, division 1's Mike Baron defeated Rich Baker, 415-390. Mike played TABORING for 80 and then tried BELOvING, but Rich challenged it off. Using Rich's ensuing play, Mike got down OVErBID, making DA, which neither player noticed until much later.

The tournament's first recount came last round in a game between Dave Wiegand and Tunde Ogunyemi at division 1's table 11. In the end, David maintained his 3-point lead, 414-411. Also division 1, Brian Cappelletto won his first game against Marjorie Schoneboom, 419-296.

Karrie Bowe lost her first game to TC Houlgate-West, 368-303. They are both in Division 3.

Expert newcomer Joey Mallick lost his first game to the veteran Richie Lund in Division 1, 441-357.

Division 2's Kitty Steinwand lost her first game to Ken Lambe, 403-360. In the same division, Carlynn Mayer defeated Adrian Mannella at board 2 in a tough game, 409-396. He played EXORISE for 100 points.
