CSC98 Commentary: Round 17

Round 17

Table 1 features Joel Wapnick against James Cherry and Table 2 pits
Albert Hahn against Jim Nanavati. The tiles are clicking a bit louder
as we near the end of this round. One game after this and the stress
is beginning to show on some of the faces.

We took a group shot after round 15 and a staff shot after round
16, so expect those up sometime before next Wednesday. John
Chew says he really needed the coffee break before this round and
he's almost caught up on his duties.

I'm off to roam for a bit.

At board 2 this round, Albert Hahn beat Jim Nanavati, 449-367.
Albert played VEXATE for 48, IsATINE, and CoUPLED. Jim got
down DOVETAIL and SCARFING. Albert said, "It was actually a
really easy game for me. I got all the tiles early on and it wasn't
close after the first few plays."

Fern Lindzon tells me that she went from 7-2 to 8-9. C'est la vie.

Jeff Parsons is 8.5-8.5 -2. He says, "I a defining mediocrity." While
I'm at it, I should say hi to Katherine for him.

At board 1, James Cherry pulled out a win against Joel Wapnick,
343-330. This low-scoring game had only one bingo, James'
pOTLINE. Another nice play made by James was JINGO for 58.
The endgame was hard to watch and both players came down to 7
seconds each on their clocks. Whew! Talk about high drama!

Adam Logan was the victor in his game against Shaun Goatcher,
377-317. While he was escaping outside in the gently falling rain, I
talked to Shaun a bit. He was sorry he'd lost the game, but he
enjoyed it nonetheless. With sincerity and kindness Shaun told me
that he thinks Adam is great and one of the three best players in
the world. On their board I saw these plays: ANNaTES by Shaun;
ACETAMID and MaNDRELS by Adam.
